How to Write Perfect Title Tags
Discover how to craft title tags that improve click-through rates and boost your search rankings.
Why Title Tags Matter
The title tag is the single most important on-page SEO element. It tells search engines what your page is about and appears as the clickable blue headline in search results. A well-crafted title tag can dramatically improve your click-through rate (CTR) — even if you rank in position 3 or 4.
Google uses the title tag as a primary signal for understanding page relevance. If your title doesn't match the user's search intent, Google may rewrite it — which is a sign you need to improve it.
The Anatomy of a Perfect Title Tag
- Length: Keep it between 50–60 characters. Google typically truncates titles longer than ~600px (roughly 60 characters).
- Primary keyword first: Place your most important keyword near the beginning of the title.
- Brand at the end: Add your brand name after a separator (| or –) at the end, e.g. How to Write Title Tags | SEO Audit Tool.
- Unique per page: Every page must have a distinct title tag. Duplicate titles confuse search engines.
- Match search intent: If users search "how to", your title should answer that. If they search for a product, your title should reflect that.

When Google Rewrites Your Title
Google rewrites title tags in about 20% of cases. This usually happens when:
- The title is too long or too short
- The title doesn't match the page's actual content
- The title is stuffed with keywords
- The title is identical to the H1 heading
If Google is rewriting your titles, it's a signal to revisit them. Use our SEO Audit Tool to check your title tags across your site.
